Energy drinks and shots have received a significant amount of attention in the press recently. Reports have linked them to numerous deaths and hospital admissions. Most of these energy drinks have about twice the amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. Energy drinks will make you dehydrated and anxious. One other issue with energy drinks is that, when combined with alcohol, they increase the severity of a hangover.
After treating thousands of hangovers (more than any other doctor in the world,) I have noticed that people who drink more than 2 or 3 energy drinks in a night tend to have some of the worst hangovers imaginable. At our Las Vegas hangover clinic, we have seen some clients that have consumed as many as 12 Red Bulls in one 12 hour span of partying. When I go to do an in-room treatment and I see empty 12 packs of Red Bull outside their room, it is always a sign that I have my work cut out for me. Read more →
Recently, there has been quite a bit of press coverage about the possibility of asparagus being a cure for hangovers. On first glance, I was rather skeptical, but decided to look into the matter just to be fair. The basis for the “Asparagus Hangover Cure” is one study out of Korea in which an extract of asparagus leaves was used on cells in a petri dish.
The initial results may have suggested some promise in the area of hangover prevention. However, those initial results are not very encouraging as a preventive measure since the study was never applied to humans. I found the actual scientific study and thought it was an interesting scientific study, but there are years more research necessary before a conclusion can be reached.

I frequently see clients in Hangover Heaven who are here for a 4 or 5 day trip and they are completely burned out on day 3 or 4 because they went to hard the first night or two. There is quite a bit of anticipation for a trip to Las Vegas and many people start drinking on the plane here and then drink all day and night once they arrive. Sometimes they can power through that hangover, but the hangover the next day can be a real show-stopper. Here is how to avoid this: Read more →

Coconut water has received quite a bit of buzz in the press for being a great hangover cure. As a person very interested in hangovers, I decided to delve into the subject and see what science is behind it. To begin my examination of coconut water, let’s see what is in it.
Coconut water is what is inside a young coconut. As the coconut matures, the liquid contains a bit more sugar and gets mostly absorbed into the meat of the coconut. Read more →

So, many traditional “Home Hangover Cures” center around fatty meals loaded with saturated fats. Fatty meals might help to prevent hangovers if eaten while drinking, as the fat slows alcohol absorption. But, after the hangover is already set up, a fat-laden meal is not the best thing for your body. When the body breaks down alcohol, it stresses the body and uses up anti-oxidants. Saturated fats also cause stress on the body and use up anti-oxidants. While a high fat meal might make you feel better for the short term, it probably is going to contribute to you feeling more sluggish and foggy Read more →

The World Series of Poker is back in Las Vegas! Over 30,000 poker players will participate in this years event.
